Hormonal Acne: Your Skin In Depth

By April 14, 2022 Beauty

Hormonal Acne is when breakouts form in adulthood that could range from blackheads and whiteheads, to painful cysts. Hormonal acne is linked to the overproduction of sebum, which clogs pores, leading to pimples.

It is exactly what it sounds like – acne tied to fluctuations in your hormones. Although its normally associated with hormone fluctuations during puberty, hormonal acne can affect adults at any age. It’s very common in women. A number of many factors can contribute to this, including menstruation and menopause.

It is estimated that 50% of women aged 20-29 have acne. It affects about 25% of women ages 40-49.

Characteristics of Hormonal Acne

During puberty, hormonal acne often appears in the T-zone – this includes your forehead, nose, and chin. Hormonal adult acne normally forms on the lower part of your face, this includes the bottom of the cheeks and around the jawline. For some people, hormonal acne takes the form of blackheads, whiteheads and small pimples, or cysts – cysts form deep under the skin and don’t come to a head on the surface, they are often tender to touch.

Menopausal Acne

Many women begin to experience menopause in their 40s and 50s. This causes a natural decline in the reproductive hormones, resulting in an end to menstruation. Some women experience acne during the menopause. This is likely due to a drop in oestrogen levels or an increase in androgen hormones like testosterone.

However, you are not to worry. Hormonal acne is completely common, you are not alone. There are ways to treat acne, and things to make sure you are doing in your daily routine, such as:

  • Wash your face in both the morning and evening, this will remove any excess oil, pollution and/or makeup from the surface of the skin.
  • Apply a purifying daily moisturiser.
  • Wear sunscreen daily.
  • Apply no more than a pea sized amount of any acne product. Applying too much can dry out the skin and increase irritation.
